IM Live Session #1: Establishing Inclusivity and Belonging

In this session, Dan Levy led a demonstration lesson that he uses in his own coursework on thinking probabilistically when making decisions. During the lesson, his teaching staff tracked participation using the Teachly app.

After the demonstration, Junlei Li spoke with Dan about his approach to establishing inclusivity; then, both Dan and Junlei answered questions from the audience. Date: February 14, 2023

Discussion Questions

  • What intentional moves do you see Dan Levy making to increase belonging and inclusivity in the demonstration?
  • One key element of Dan’s teaching in this demonstration is the use of student pre-work. How might you use pre-work in your classroom to increase belonging and inclusivity?
  • What do you see as the relationship between inclusivity and belonging? How are they similar and/or different?
  • Junlei Li asks Dan if he feels nervous before he teaches. How do you see this question relating to establishing inclusivity and belonging?
  • Junlei brings up the idea of “at least one” when he mentions using self-deprecating humor about his accent. What might you draw on from your own background or experiences to make “at least one” student feel included?
